Desert Bloom River Trip

May 4th-11th, 2024

Trip Description

Embark on a transformational journey with us as we guide you along the serene currents of the Green River. In the gentle embrace of nature's rhythm, we extend a heartfelt invitation to immerse yourself in a 6-day intergenerational therapeutic canoe trip designed for women-identifying and non-binary folks (who are comfortable in femme-centered spaces. Beneath towering canyon walls, we will navigate the traditional Land and Waters of the Ute, Diné, and Timpanogos Peoples with the leadership of clinical therapists, naturalists, and professional river guides. Within the container of a safe and supportive intergenerational community, this trip will cultivate a sense of joy, delight, play, peace, and flourishing.

We intend to guide you away from the relentless demands of the modern clock and calendar, rooted in consumptive, capitalist culture, and guide you seamlessly into the natural ebb and flow of Kairos time – a time where nature's processes unfold at their own pace.

We will spend five nights and six days together on the river. Our time will include daily therapeutic group facilitation, guided creativity and art workshops, journaling and mindfulness practices, movement, yoga, singing and music, and child-like play. We will camp along the quiet banks of the river every night and share in nourishing meals and conversations. Each day has a new theme for contemplation and discussion and brings ample opportunities for paddling, hiking, and exploring the gifts of the canyon. Intentional quiet spaces for self-reflection and rest will weave together with unstructured time and flexibility to flow and adapt to the rhythms of the river.

*women: recognizing the existence of oppressive and discriminatory systems within the outdoor industry, we acknowledge the systemic barriers that hinder various groups from accessing and fully enjoying outdoor recreation and outdoor spaces. Indigenous Peoples, People of the Global Majority, LGBTQI2SA+ individuals, gender non-conforming individuals, non-binary individuals, and people with disabilities have an inherent right to equal access, inclusion, belonging, enjoyment and representation in these spaces.  Desert Bloom is committed to breaking down these barriers. While this trip is specifically designed for individuals who identify as women, we emphasize our dedication to fostering an environment that respects, includes, and welcomes the intersectionality of all women. Our aim is to create an outdoor experience where every participant feels a sense of belonging, representation, and the freedom to embrace the transformative power of nature.

 FAQs

  • In general, a therapeutic river trip offers benefits such as relaxation, appreciation of nature, enhanced kinship and a sense of physical wellness. Most participants report a sense of peace and "living in the moment” after such a trip. It is our intention to deliberately shift our ordinary perception of time, easing out of the daily demands of “Kronos” time - the clock-and-calendar time that keeps us rushing in consumptive, capitalist dominant culture. Instead, we will yield to the flow of “Kairos” time, which processes in nature tend to follow, allowing for growth, play, mystery, and deep healing. It is important to note that while this trip is therapeutic in nature, it is not therapy nor is it a substitute for therapy. We recommend that if you are seeking serious mental health support that you find a licensed therapist in your area.

  • Our transformative canoe trip will include daily group process facilitated by experienced therapists. These containers create a safe, intentional, and supportive space for participants to share their thoughts, emotions, and personal experiences. The therapeutic process within the group setting allows individuals to explore and address various aspects of their well-being, fostering a sense of connection, support, and understanding among participants. These collective healing spaces foster a reciprocal relationship for healing with the land and water. Group sessions on our trip provide an opportunity for women-aligned participants to build meaningful connections, offer support, and collectively navigate the challenges and joys of the experience.

  • Each day on the river brings its own unique gifts, however most days will follow a similar schedule. We’ll wake up in the morning with the light, some folks will help with the preparation of breakfast and others might enjoy some unstructured time to write in their journals, enjoy their coffee or do some morning yoga or meditation. After breakfast, we’ll pack up camp and load all of our gear into the canoes. We’ll push off from shore and spend most of the day playing and paddling along the river. There will be places to stop each day to swim, visit historical sites, or go on hikes up some of the side canyons. We’ll enjoy lunch and make sure everyone is staying hydrated throughout the day.

Each day will have therapeutic themes that will be discussed throughout the day and incorporated into various programming. In the afternoon we’ll arrive at our new campsite and as a team we will collectively unload all of our gear - building a new home for the night. This process requires the help of everyone and is a greatly rewarding way to get to contribute to our community. In the evenings, you will help to cook dinner and we will share a meal together. We’ll have discussions and create facilitated therapeutic group spaces in camp during the evenings and throughout the day on our rest day..
